We’ve noticed significant growth of Himalayan balsam around the upper area of Kelly Glen, particularly near the rear of the mugga. While these plants might appear attractive, Himalayan balsam is highly invasive and can rapidly take over, hindering the growth of our native Scottish plants and reducing biodiversity.

Kelly Glen is a uniquely special woodland area, and we at the Skelmorlie Environment Trust are committed to preserving and encouraging its native flora. To address this, we’re organising a Himalayan balsam clearance session.

  • Meeting Point: Playpark next to school

This is an easy-going, community-focused activity, good for kids too. Himalayan balsam plants are fortunately very easy to remove when young, making this a rewarding task for everyone. Bring along gloves, and optionally, a small trowel or spade if you have one.

Let’s work together to protect and nurture the natural beauty of Kelly Glen—your help will make a real difference!

Himalayan balsam

Himalayan balsam is an annual plant with scented flowers in shades of pink and purple. Introduced to Britain as an ornamental garden plant, it is now considered a problematic weed, particularly along watercourses.
